I have this same issue as well. Not to mention if I place my call on mute on my iPhone 5, and then the screen timeout is reached I need to press the home button to wake up the phone, press the home button again to type in my passcode, then the phone unlocks to the home screen (not the phone app where I had left it before the lockscreen timeout) then tap the green bar at the top of the screen to get back to my phone controls. By this time the person I'm talking to thinks I hung up because they didn't hear from me while it took me so long to unmute my phone. This is very important while on conference calls with multiple members. This also happens with my iPhone 6 (seems to be an iOS10 thing).

I just accidentally learned how to access the call functions from the lock screen! While on a call, tap the phone number/call duration timer on the lock screen and the phone controls appear. You can test this by plugging in headphones while on a call and pressing the sleep/wake button on the phone to lock it (this will end the call if you don't have headphones plugged in). I wish changes like this would be noted somewhere. I hope this helps people!

While using headphones, make a call, lock the phone, press the lock button again to show the lock screen then tap on the name of the person or phone number you called that's displayed on the lock screen and it will show you the call controls without having to unlock the phone.

You should be able to do it without headphones as well. I was just saying to use headphones so that you can force the screen lock for testing purposes (so you don't have to wait for the timeout). Without headphones pressing the lock button will end your call.

I have the same issue with the iPhone 7 plus. This is troubling, as while on a call, the most easy to access features should be the call controls. I hope this gets fixed soon with an update, as having to perform as little as a single aimed (at the call timer) touch adds in unnecessary complexity and reduces usability.

Why is this happening ? I have my phone set to lock after 5 min but it's locking the phone while on calls after 1 min or even less.

My iPhone 7+ has the issue as well. I found that it's not because the phone was locked; it's because the display didn't turn on after it's dimmed during the call.
